PREGNANCY GUIDE

Pregnancy Trimester Guide

Baby development, maternal changes, recommended tests and warning signs across the three stages of pregnancy — a trimester-by-trimester guide.

Pregnancy Trimester Guide

Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks and is divided into three main stages (trimesters). Each stage has its own developmental milestones, recommended tests and warning signs.

The guide below covers your baby's development, the changes in your body and the tests recommended for regular follow-up in each trimester. Remember: every pregnancy is unique — keep up with your routine check-ups for an accurate assessment.

PREGNANCY GUIDE

Pregnancy, Trimester by Trimester

1st Trimester

Weeks 1–13
Baby's Development
The organs take shape; the heartbeat can be seen from week 6. By the end of this stage the baby is about 7–8 cm.
Changes in the Mother
Nausea, fatigue and breast tenderness are common. Hormonal changes can affect mood.
Recommended Tests
First examination and ultrasound, blood count, blood group, thyroid and glucose screening, NT scan at weeks 11–14.
Advice
Start folic acid, avoid smoking and alcohol entirely, and always consult your doctor before taking any medication.

2nd Trimester

Weeks 14–27
Baby's Development
A period of rapid growth: movements begin to be felt, sex can be determined, hearing develops.
Changes in the Mother
Nausea usually eases and energy returns. The bump becomes visible and back pain may start.
Recommended Tests
Detailed (anomaly) ultrasound at weeks 18–22, gestational diabetes screening (OGTT) at weeks 24–28, blood count follow-up.
Advice
Eat regularly and in balance, exercise gently with your doctor's approval, drink plenty of water and protect your sleep.

3rd Trimester

Weeks 28–40
Baby's Development
The lungs mature and weight gain accelerates; the baby settles into the birth position.
Changes in the Mother
Shortness of breath, frequent urination and swollen legs may occur. Practice contractions can begin.
Recommended Tests
More frequent check-ups, NST (fetal heart monitoring), growth ultrasound, blood count and Doppler if needed.
Advice
Prepare your hospital bag, discuss your birth plan with your doctor, and seek care immediately if movements decrease.
